Data show more gamers play Dota 2 and Counter-Strike on Steam

Based on the data collected, medium game time is 23 hours of game time into playing Dota 2 along with 17 hours into Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and 10 hours for Team Fortress 2. The number of active players is also high as Dota 2 attracts about 9,079,675 while Counter-Strike: Global Offensive has about 6,483,379.

It should also be noted that all three games were published by Valve while both Dota 2 and Team Fortress 2 are among the most popular games at e-sporting events.

Steam Spy is a program that tracks and records the activities of the Steam community then ranks them based on an algorithm. The purpose of this data is for market research and for journalists and scholars to study the activities of the Steam community.

According to Sergey Galyonkin, developer of the program, Steam Spy collects real-time data from users who use the system. He dose admit there could be a margin of error due to the limited users but is confident in its accuracy.

Dota 2 is a free to play online arena game that started as a mod for Warcraft III mod before being purchased by Valve. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Team Fortress 2 are online multiplayer shooter games that started as a mod for Half-Life before being purchased by Valve.
