Darryl Worley talks music, Darryl Worley Cancer Treatment Center (Includes interview)

Tomorrow, on August 18, Worley will be playing the Fallon County Fair in Baker, Montana. “We just get out there and play the hits, and try to have an uptempo show. We have a great song that is doing well on satellite radio,” he said, referring to “Lonely Alone.” “We will play some new songs, and all of the hit songs that they expect to hear, and rock it out.”

His smash single “Have You Forgotten?” stayed at No. 1 for seven weeks on the Billboard Hot country charts. “That song got us so many different opportunities in New York City,” Worley said. “We even did The Howard Stern Show because of that song.”

Worley’s plans for the future are to continue traveling, writing, recording, and playing music. “That’s what I do,” he admitted.

The Darryl Worley Cancer Treatment Center was a project that he decided to undertake with his foundation. “It was one of the really big projects. It was something our town desperately needed,” he said. “We took on the challenge and we just killed it. This was a huge project, and we had a lot of support from the people in our home area. To this day, it is one of the coolest things that we have been able to pull off. It has been a huge blessing.”

He listed Dolly Parton and Lee Ann Womack as his dream female duet choices in country music. “I love Dolly and her vocal style,” he said. “I also think Lee Ann Womack is incredible.”

Worley recently collaborated with Lorrie Morgan, Pam Tillis and Joe Diffie on “Summer Wine.” “It turned out really good,” he said.

Digital transformation of the country music scene

On the impact of technology on the country music scene, Worley said, “Everything has changed. I got my start back in the day when record sales were still a big deal. We were trying to get out there and help ourselves and the record label make some money. These days, people almost ignore that and just go for the downloads and the streams. It’s more about using social media to build a fan-base. It has been mindboggling for me. It’s a completely different business these days.”

Regarding his use of technology in his daily routine as a country artist, Worley said, “These days, when we record in the studio, technology has changed everything. If we want to add steel guitar on a song, we send it to a guy in Nashville, he adds the steel guitar and sends it back to us. On a daily basis, we have to work social media like crazy.”

He expressed his gratitude to his country fans for being the reason why he has been able to have longevity in the country music genre. “I don’t have the biggest fan-base in the world, but I have some of the most loyal fans that anyone could ever have, and it really means the world to me,” he said, effusively.

Lonely Alone” is available on iTunes.
