Emmy award-winning actor Darin Brooks chatted about starring as Max in “Amber Brown” on Apple TV+.
Based on the children’s book series by Paula Danziger, it was created by, written by, and directed by Bonnie Hunt, who also served as a co-executive producer. “I was so excited when I found out that Bonnie Hunt was a part of this because I love Bonnie,” he said. “We also need to give props to the books by Paula Danzinger.”
“Doing ‘Amber Brown’ has been great,” Brooks admitted. “I can’t believe it has been almost a year since we shot it in Utah with the amazing Bonnie Hunt.” “It was such a fun show to shoot, it was great,” he said, and he praised the entire cast of actors that he worked with on this project.
Aside from Darin Brooks as Max, “Amber Brown” stars Carsyn Rose in the title role of Amber Brown, Sarah Drew as Sarah Brown, Ashley Williams as Aunt Pam, Michael Yo as Philip, and Liliana Inouye as Brandi.
“Playing Max was great, he’s a fun character to play,” he said. “I play mom’s boyfriend that is coming in to win over the affections of Amber Brown and sort of step in and take care of her and the family. It’s a fun balance. Max is a health nut and I am very health conscious myself in my personal life so it is neat how life imitated art. He has a lot of eccentric qualities to him too, which I love to play in all of my characters. It was a blast.”
Brooks proclaimed protagonist Carsyn Rose as a “star in the making.” “Carsyn is so good, entertaining, and engaging. She was the perfect lead for this show,” he said. “She has the comedy, the heart, and the drama. She is just doing it right. I am super excited to see where her career goes.”
“Ashley was amazing, we joked around the whole time. She is great and super funny. She is so talented and smart,” he said.
The synopsis of the series is as follows: Growing up is a work of art. “Amber Brown” follows a young girl finding her voice through music and art in the wake of her mother and father’s divorce and her best friend moving away. “Amber Brown” will be released globally on Friday, July 29 on Apple TV+

“Honestly, I am so proud of this show,” he said about “Amber Brown.” “It’s just a fun, feel-good family dramedy. There is heart, love, sadness, tension, and comedy in it, and it is all wrapped into a beautiful little story.”
“I think it’s going to be a beautiful show that people can see and relate to, and hopefully, it can get people talking,” he added.
Silver lining during the quarantine
The pandemic has afforded him the opportunity to spend time with his girls and watch them grow. “Seeing and experiencing all of those moments has been a special blessing,” he said. “That has been a silver lining in my book.”
“I can swaddle like nobody’s business,” he said about the skills that he developed during the pandemic. “I know how to swaddle babies so well. I’ve really mastered that part,” he said with a sweet laugh.
Being a father to two girls has been a “blast” for Brooks. “I love my girls. They teach me a lot, they teach me how to be a better man,” he said.
‘The Bold and The Beautiful’
Darin Brooks also stars as Wyatt Spencer in the popular CBS soap opera “The Bold and The Beautiful.” Last year, in 2021, he scored an Emmy nomination for “Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.” “That was amazing, I was happy about that one because the competition is so stiff,” he said. “I was very happy to finally get nominated for my acting work on ‘The Bold and The Beautiful’.”
He was so thrilled for co-star John McCook for winning the 2022 Daytime Emmy Award for “Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.” “John is such a good soul and he loves the show, the people, and what he does. He is the dad on the set and off the set. I was so over the moon to watch him win,” Brooks said.
“I am also happy Aaron D. Spears got nominated this year, he killed it in his storyline this year. Aaron was great, and I really loved his scenes with Don Diamont,” he said.
On the title of the current chapter of his life, Brooks said, “Just Go With It.”
If he were to have any superpower, it would be to fly or to breathe underwater. “I grew up in Hawaii surfing and I wish I could breathe underwater, that would be awesome,” he said.
Dream acting partners
Brooks listed Kevin Costner, Harrison Ford, Johnny Depp, Al Pacino, and Jack Nicholson, as his dream acting partners. “There are so many great actors out there,” he admitted.
He also had great words about actor and wrestler Jessie Godderz. “I would actually love to work with Jessie, he would be fun. He’s a good dude,” he said.
At the moment, his favorite series to binge-watch include “Yellowstone,” “1883,” “Ted Lasso,” “Succession,” and “Severance” on Apple TV+
The greatest lesson that acting has taught him
On the greatest lesson that the acting profession has ever taught him, he said, “Don’t be complacent, always stay hungry, and always follow your dreams. Keep going after your passion and your dream, and everything else will work out.”
Some of his favorite mottos to live by are “follow your dreams,” “trust yourself,” and “don’t let anybody tell you no, keep going.”
Success
On his definition of success, Brooks said, “Being able to work, and continue working on different shows, and seeing how that affects people. I love it when people enjoy my work because that means I did my job.”
