14-time Grammy winner Dan Tyminski chatted about his new EP “One More Time Before You Go: A Tribute to Tony Rice.”
New EP
In this five-track EP, which was released via North Star Records, Tyminski pays homage to the late but great bluegrass musician and guitarist Tony Rice.
On the song selection process for the new EP, he said, “It started with ‘One More Time Before You Go,’ which I wrote with Josh Williams. That was the genesis of this project for sure. When I first wrote that song, I didn’t really necessarily want to put it out, it was a form of self-healing for me to help me mourn with the loss of my musical hero.”
This EP features collaborations with such acclaimed artists as Molly Tuttle, Billy Strings, Jerry Douglas, and Sam Bush, among others. “Tony Rice did a lot of duets, those were very important to him,” he said. “It was a really good idea to get some of the younger musicians that were influenced by Tony. I was very fortunate to get the people that I had on here.”
He listed the full bang song “One More Time Before You Go” as his personal favorite tune on the EP, and the one that means the most to him. Another favorite was “Church Street Blues,” which was penned by Tony Rice himself.
On the title of the current chapter of his life, he revealed, “Buckle Up… there’s a lot of new music coming.”
Tour
He will be touring to bring the music to the fans. On September 1, he will be performing at Daryl’s House in Pawling, New York. “We are really looking forward to that one. That’s going to be a really fun show,” he admitted. “I am excited to get the band in that environment and see what we can come up with.”
Dream female duet choices
On his dream female duet choices in music, he responded, “I have had the good fortune to play with my favorite female artist for 30 years. Alison has always been the best and she will always remain the best. She is just the best female singer out there.”
Tyminski also had great words about Dale Ann Bradley. “I love Dale Ann Bradley, she’s a phenomenal singer, and she is such a sweet person,” he exclaimed. “Dale Ann is one of the nicest people you will ever get to meet or know.”
He revealed that there is more music in the works with Alison Krauss + Union Station.
The digital age
On being an artist in the digital age, he said, “It has been interesting to watch that unfold throughout my career. When I started, we were recording on tape and then it went digital, and then it went streaming.”
“Ultimately, there are more pluses,” he acknowledged. “At the end of the day, I want my music to reach as many people as possible, that’s the state that we are in these days. I think it’s fantastic to have access to so much and to have your music presented to so many people in that format. It is all about your music being shared and heard by people.”
Tyminski defined the word succes simply as being “able to pay his bills working in the field that he loves, which is music.” “Continue to play music for a living,” he said.
His “One More Time Before You Go” EP is available on digital service providers by clicking here. “With this EP, I want people to realize how much of an impact Tony Rice had on the entire world of music, in particular, bluegrass guitar music. The EP that I put together for this really represents Tony’s influence. His touch is so wide-reaching,” he said.
