Actor Dan Fowlks chatted about his new movie “Happily Ever Emma,” which is a modern-day adaptation of Jane Austen’s “Emma.”

Fowlks stars opposite Monica Moore Smith in the film. In “Happily Ever Emma,” actress Emma Hutton is determined to help find her friend Hope a perfect match, but in doing so, she accidentally tramples on several hearts, including her own.

“We filmed it in June of 2020 so it has been a minute,” he admitted. “I’ve worked with the production company a couple of times before so it was nice to actually work during the pandemic. It was nice to be in a state that was allowing work to happen.”

“It was inspired by Jane Austen’s book ‘Emma,’ and it has a modern flair to it,” he said.

The movie will be premiering on Saturday, March 4, on Great American Family. “It’s exciting,” he said. “I am glad that it is getting out there, and people will get a chance to enjoy it. That is always good to hear, especially at a time when so many feel-good movies are being made.”

Fowlks plays the role of Gray Knightley. “I was only familiar with the Jane Austen story through ‘Clueless’ because it’s a take on the story that has been done before. It was fun to see how Brittany Wiscombe, the writer, formed this world around this adaptation. We just had a great time.”

“I hope people enjoy the adaptation of it even if they are familiar with the story,” he added.

The digital age

He opened up about being an actor in the digital age. “Acting to me has always been about storytelling,” he said. “I always pursued more writing and directing and then, I tried acting to see where it went. One thing lead to another and I did all of these auditions, and I had fun with it.”

“Being on this journey has been nice, and so has getting to meet all these people, and all the opportunities that came from it. You are with other people wanting to create a story as the common goal,” he added.

Future plans

On his plans for the future, Fowlks said, “I always try to keep busy, and I am looking for the next project to work on. I do a lot of self-producing projects, and being in Utah, I am working on a western right now so it has been fun, that’s the beauty of living in the desert in southern Utah.”

“I am also keeping up with some stage productions, where I will be playing Stacee Jaxx in ‘Rock of Ages’ for a theater company here. I am staying active as much as I can in the acting realm,” he said.

Favorite mottos

Regarding his favorite mottos to live by, Fowlks said, “Just have a good work ethic, work hard and work smart. You need to have a passion and a desire to do something in life. Your attitude determines your altitude.”

Success

Fowlks defined the word success as follows: “If you are happy with what you are doing, and you have given it your best, I feel that success is a continuous journey. It all goes back to your attitude about things in life.”
