Regarding the secret to living a long life, over 100 years, Dame Vera Lynn said, “I feel very blessed to reach 100 years but I’m not sure if there is a specific secret that applies to everyone. It is a mixture of good fortune and personally, I think it is worthwhile to remain active and interested in world affairs, spend time with family and friends, limit the use of technology, and eat good, nutritious food.”
The compilation album, Vera Lynn 100, was released in honor of her 100th birthday. “It was lovely to release the album, and to see what wonderful innovations are possible with modern music technology. There were also some of the best British singers around on the album including Alfie Boe, Alexander Armstrong, Aled Jones and The Squadronaires. I am so lucky to have had such a long and interesting career,” she said, graciously.
For her 100th birthday celebration, her image was projected over the White Cliffs of Dover. “I was amazed,” she admitted. “I have been so overwhelmed by all of the lovely messages and gestures I have received for my birthday. I thank everyone who wrote to me, and to everyone who celebrated the occasion whether it be at the Palladium concert or a tea party in their local town.”
Dame Vera Lynn talks about the digital transformation of the music industry
“I’m not really up-to-date with modern music technology but I was impressed by the production of the new album,” she said. “It’s clear that they can do incredible things with new technology, such as creating the duets on the CD.”
Back in her days, she acknowledged that there was a lack of technology, especially in the music industry. “There wasn’t really any technology. At least, not as we know it today. There was a greater emphasis on real singing with real instruments. When I traveled to entertain the boys abroad for example, my pianist and his piano came with me,” she explained.
Dame Vera Lynn opens up about her musical legacy
When asked about what she would like her legacy to be, she remarked, “That is a very big question. I would like to be remembered for entertaining our brave boys during the war. Those are among my most treasured memories. My children’s charity is also very close to my heart; it does wonderful work helping families and children affected by cerebral palsy and associated conditions. The charity recently moved to a new center in Cuckfield, and all of the donations it receives are greatly appreciated.”

I am always delighted to hear from people around the world. It is lovely how music can bring together so many people from such diverse backgrounds.
