Country singer-songwriter Dallas Alexander chatted about his new music, and being a part of the digital age.
How did “Can’t Blame My Bloodline” come about?
I’d been on the hunt for the song to wrap up my album. I spent a week writing in Nashville last year, but nothing clicked—nothing lit me up enough to finish it.
Then I got a text from a buddy down in Key West, asking me to come do a write with him. So, I called Sara (my wife), and she told me to fly to Florida and get the album done. So, I changed my flights and headed there.
But when I got to Florida… I still didn’t find it. I didn’t write ‘the’ song. I came back home, totally drained from all the traveling, but couldn’t sleep.
So, in the middle of the night, I got out of bed and started working on something new. That’s when Can’t Blame My Bloodline was born. It just came to me.
I chased that song around the country. Loved it so much that it ended up becoming the album’s muse.
What inspires your music and songwriting?
Inspiration comes from everywhere for me—my childhood, where I’m from (a lot of backwoods shit), my time in the military, the places I’ve traveled, and just life itself with all its crazy juxtapositions. There’s love, there’s tragedy, and then there are the stories that I get to witness.
But, of course, the music of the greats always plays a big part too. Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Sturgill Simpson—those guys paved the way.
Then, you’ve got today’s legends like Jamey Johnson, Whiskey Myers, and Colter Wall, just to name a few. Their music speaks to me, and it drives me to keep creating.
What do your plans for the future include?
Touring, touring, touring… that’s the heartbeat of it all for me. I want to be out there performing live, as much as possible. That’s where the real connection happens. It’s not just about playing the songs—it’s about showing people who we are, what we stand for, and what we bring to the table.
When they feel that energy, when they see the real us, that’s when the magic clicks. Growing daily as a guitar player, vocalist, and songwriter.
How does it feel to be an artist in the digital age? (where streaming, technology and social media are so prevalent)
It’s incredible because you can connect with anyone, anywhere, at literally any time. But with that power comes a whole new set of challenges.
Now, it’s all about navigating the digital landscape—figuring out social media, cracking the marketing code, and staying ahead of ever-changing algorithms. It’s a constant hustle to keep up, but it’s part of the game.
What is your advice for young and aspiring artists?
Haha, don’t sleep—seriously though, if this is something you want to do, then go for it. No second-guessing, no backup plan.
You’ve got to dive in headfirst, all in. Live and breathe your music and your passion every single day. That’s the only way you’re gonna make it. It’s all about commitment, hustle, and staying true to what you love. If you’re not ready to go all in, then what’s the point?
Which female artists would you like to do a dream duet with and why?
Alicia Keys, cause she’s the best.
What does the word success mean to you?
Success to me? It’s simple—being able to do what I love and take care of the people I love. That’s it. Everything else is just noise. If I can keep making music and provide for the people who’ve had my back, then I’m winning.
What would you like to tell our readers about your new single “Can’t Blame My Bloodline”?
That song? I love that it’s a party anthem—it gets the crowd hyped every single time we play it. The energy is electric. It’s so damn fun to perform, and when the crowd’s feeding off it, you can feel the whole room come alive. That’s what it’s all about!
What’s the one thing you want them to get out of it?
It’s definitely one of those tracks with a vibe that’s made for a party. High energy, for sure—we want fans to crank it up during road trips and vibe out at shows. But there’s also a deeper layer to it, where it encourages self-reflection.
It’s about owning up to your actions and taking responsibility. Hopefully, that resonates with listeners and they catch that part too.
