Conan O’Brien to officiate gay marriage on TV in special episode

The unique event is part of O’Brien’s celebration of his one-year anniversary hosting his show on TBS.

Media reports say “O’Brien will be marrying a longtime staffer and his partner.” The special episode will tape at the Beacon Theater in New York.

New York was the sixth state to legalize gay marriage in June and the law took effect the following month.

Televised weddings are big business for networks. The first televised wedding aired on The Tonight Show 42 years ago, between Tiny Tim and Miss Vicki, drawing 21.3 million viewers. More recently, 23 million Americans watched the Royal Wedding and the Kim Kardashian wedding attracted more than four million viewers.
