Actor and filmmaker Colin K. Bass chatted about “DigiDestined,” his new live action Digimon short movie.

‘DigiDestined’

On the idea for this concept, Bass said, “I have always loved Digimon, but never thought we had the time or resources to do anything live action. Then we were all on lockdown due to COVID, so I filmed the scene with Agumon since we couldn’t do a full set day. One thing led to another and it became a full episode.”

Bass continued, “I had done a lot of DC and a lot of Power Rangers, so I wanted to do something anime related. Digimon was my favorite growing up and I hadn’t seen much fan made representation. So I decided to take matters into my own hands and make this as more of a love letter to Digimon. I also hoped we could rally the fans so that more Digimon merch and content would be released.”

“DigiDestined is unlike anything you’ve seen in the realm of the Digimon fandom,” he said. “Lots of Easter Eggs and fun throwbacks that fans will enjoy. And lots of room for growth. And the one thing I’d like them to get out of it… I guess it’s don’t be ashamed to like what you like and don’t be afraid to rep it.”

“I’m 32 years old making Digimon content and I’m having a blast. So if you want to create content within a fandom you love…just do it! It doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s just nice to be a part of something you love,” Bass added.

Inspirations

On his daily inspirations as a content creator and filmmaker, he said, “I just love being creative. I wrote and acted in web series for years before anyone even watched. Now that we have some viewers, I just want to spread creativity and positivity into the world and hopefully inspire others to be creative.”

Future plans

On his plans for the future, Bass remarked, “I’m neck deep into marketing for multiple anime conventions (Anime Las Vegas, Anime Pasadena and Anime Riverside). So while that job pays the bills it also allows me to film on the side. We are wrapping up ‘Power Rangers: Shattered Past’ and releasing content pretty consistently on our new channel; Anime Fire.”

Favorite motto to live by

He shared that his favorite motto to live by is the following: “Promote what you love. Don’t bash what you hate.” I think if we all followed that motto, the world would be a better place. And an oldie but goodie I try to follow is, ‘Speak with your actions’.”

Success

On his definition of the word success, Bass said, “Happiness.” “If you’re happy, then I see that as a win. We are all raised so differently on what “success” means. I had to grow up and get a job and move out, then get happy. Some people need to find their happiness, then grow up. But at the end of the day, if you’re happy then isn’t that just a big win overall?” he said.
