Colbert gives ‘Late Show’ sneak peek: Conservative persona gone

Stephen Colbert talked honestly — in between Donald Trump jokes — about how he feels about leaving Comedy Central and his plans for making the Late Show on CBS his own.

Colbert told the Television Critics Association on Monday that he is itching to get back on the air — and, yes, the controversial business mogul is on his mind. Colbert has been reduced to “dry-Trumping” because has nowhere to offer his comedic take on the presidential race.

Colbert’s personal plea to Donald Trump: “Please stay healthy until I get [back] on the air.”

Colbert said to Deadline that he chose September 8 for the premiere because that’s considered the start of the presidential race.

When asked if Trump had a real shot of winning the race, Colbert said: “Honestly, he could” and added that a president “with a giant swinging set of balls isn’t the worst thing in the world,” according to Variety.

For Colbert Report fans who wonder if the comic will miss his dimwitted, conservative alter ego — probably not for awhile. Colbert is excited to use his own voice and had grown tired of interviewing people in an artificial way — through a cardboard conservative.

“I’m looking forward to being sincerely interested in what they have to say without having to translate it through an idiot’s mouth,” Colbert said, according to Variety.

While Colbert made sharp jabs, they were never directed at his colleagues on Comedy Central. He plans not to stir rivalries among his competitors who are also friends — Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel — who also offer variety entertainment during the 11:30 pm time slot.

“The idea of war between hosts makes no sense to me,” Colbert said, as quoted by FoxNews.com. “It’s not like my success takes away from anyone else. And fighting amongst each other doesn’t sound funny. There is no joke there. So I am not interested.”

What to expect from the Late Show with Stephen Colbert?

According to FoxNews.com , the band will be led by jazz legend Jon Batiste.

Expect lots of guests, averaging 15 per week. Colbert said George Clooney will be a guest on the first show, chosen “because he’s a brilliant actor and a great director and he cares about the world,” according to Variety.

The set will be revamped with the desk moved across the stage, which was a suggestion David Letterman gave to Colbert.

Based on his answers to TCA reporters, there is much left up in the air. Colbert has brought most of his Comedy Central writing team with him.
