Tony award-winning actresses Victoria Clark, Kecia Lewis, and Audra McDonald spoke at Broadway Barks, which was held on Saturday, July 12th at Shubert Alley.

Broadway Barks,” the starry dog and cat adoption event benefiting New York City animal shelters and rescue groups, returned for its 27th edition this summer to help four-legged friends find fur-ever homes.

The event, produced by Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, was held in Shubert Alley. It was hosted by Bernadette Peters, the iconic, Tony award-winning co-founder of “Broadway Barks” and star of this season’s “Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends.”

Peters was joined by co-host Beth Leavel, her “Old Friends” cast-mate and a fellow Tony winner.

Victoria Clark

Victoria Clark won her second Tony Award for her starring role as the title character in the Broadway musical “Kimberly Akimbo.”

On being a part of this event, Clark remarked, “It feels amazing to be here. If you are an animal this event is the highlight of the year.”

On the significance of this cause, Clark stated, “Animals give us unconditional love; they give us support and they give us longer lives. They cheer us up and they support us. They are just amazing, and they have the greatest sense of humor.”

“I want all of these dogs and animals to final homes,” Clark expressed.

Kecia Lewis

Last year, Kecia Lewis won the Tony Award for “Best Featured Actress in a Musical” for her acting work in “Hell’s Kitchen” on Broadway.

On being a part of this event, Lewis exclaimed, “It’s so much fun! This is my first one. I’ve stayed away because I always want to adopt everything and everyone, so this is my first time saying ‘bite the bullet,’ you can do it.”

“Oh my goodness, I just love dogs,” she underscored.

Audra McDonald

Audra McDonald is a six-time Tony winner, and this year, she was nominated for her role as Mama Rose in “Gypsy” on Broadway.

On being a part of Broadway Barks, McDonald said, ” “I love it. I love dogs! Are you kidding me? I’m happy.”
