Atlantic recording artist Rowan Drake chatted about his new music, which includes his songs “Hey Little Sister” and “Hollow.”

What inspires your music and songwriting?

It’s funny because most of the time when I start writing an idea, the emotion and feeling just pour out. Sometimes the lyrics don’t even make sense in my current situation or other times they are a subconscious prediction of the future.

It’s only weeks or months later when that prediction has come true that I sit back and listen and wonder if some part of me knew this would be how things played out. But for the most part, the people around me are what inspire me.

From the girl who I don’t think I’ll ever be able to replace to a stranger I’ve never met, these are the people I write about.

Can you briefly tell us about your latest projects?

My two latest singles are “Hey Little Sister” and “Hollow.” “Hey Little Sister” is an apology for my younger sister. I never felt I was there enough for her throughout the traumatic events that took place many years ago. This was my attempt to communicate that with her.

“Hollow” is a song I wrote when I fell out of love with my girlfriend at the time. It’s ironic because I’ve since fallen back in love with her many times. And she is now the one who has lost the love for me.

What do your plans for the future include?

In terms of music, I want to release multiple larger bodies of work. Even if that’s not as common anymore I feel I am building something special with my core fan base and they deserve all of the music. In terms of life. I have some relationships to mend. And I need to find a place that feels like home.

How does it feel to be an artist in the digital age? (now with streaming and technology being so prevalent)

I’ve made such a beautiful community in this digital world. I think it’s a blessing in many ways. I’m excited to see how it translates into the physical spectrum and excited to continue growing the online universe that spans the globe.

Which artists would you like to do a dream duet with and why?

Jeff Buckley, although he has since passed. There was something so pure about the way he sang. I would love to get to be a part of something like that. I also think Bon Iver would be pretty amazing.

What does the word success mean to you?

If you had asked me this a year ago I think I would’ve given a much different answer. I would say right now it falls into two categories and I hope to one day to combine these into one.

First off in music… I would consider myself “successful” if I had multiple projects that influence millions of people. I would also need to play that music live for millions of people across a few stadium tours.

In terms of success as a human, I think carrying myself in a way that inspires others to do good is a great start. And setting an example of someone who cares for this planet and holds space for those around them to grow and change. If I can do that, I will feel successful.

What would you like to tell our readers about your new music?

I needed to make some of this music. I was holding on so tightly to traumas as so many of us do, and this was the only way I could let go a little. I hope you let yourself fall into the sounds. I hope you find a moment of emotional clarity somewhere in the world I’ve created.
