Brazilian DJ and electronic producer Öwnboss chatted about his new music, and his upcoming show in New York, and the digital age.
New York show
On June 9th, he will be performing at the venue Somewhere Nowhere in New York City.
“It’s always fun to come to New York,” he said. “It has become one of my favorite places in the world. It’s my third time in the city and I feel like it’s a very cosmopolitan place, with different people all the time, coming and going making it a great vibe all round. Because of that, for every show I expect a totally different audience from the other.”
“I’ll feel at the time what to play, but you can expect a set with my biggest tracks, a lot of groove, vocals and special new tricks,” he exclaimed.
Music and songwriting inspirations
On his music, songwriting, and producing inspirations, he said, “I always look to old songs as reference, songs that I like and that bring good memories to me. It could be pop, rock, hip hop, indie.”
“The beginning of a track for me always has an instant connection with a song that has awakened something in the past and each production has a different goal, whether it is to be functional on the dancefloor or get across a deep message to the listener,” he elaborated.
“I get vocals almost every day from songwriters from all over the world and if the lyrics and the lines can bring something emotive or new, then we start working until we reach a result that pleases everyone. It’s a real team effort,” he added.
The digital age
On being an electronic musician in the digital age, now with streaming and technology being so prevalent, he said, “While it’s extremely amazing to be living everything I’m living thanks to the digital age, it also makes me feel a little bit like… nostalgic.”
“I miss the not-so-digital era in several ways, so it’s a mix of feelings,” he admitted. “Today everything happens very fast, with numbers and more numbers, which brings more disposable things and a pressure of always been doing something in a crazy race that technology nowadays puts you in.”
“I’m still trying to get used to this world, and trying to take it easy, because my goal on earth isn’t to create temporary stuff, but music, art, and connections that last,” he added.
‘Move Your Body’
He also opened up about the commercial success of his track “Move Your Body.” “I’m extremely proud of that track,” he admitted. “You work for years and more years and suddenly… boom. Your life changes completely, the feeling is as happy as possible, and I just have to be thankful for everything that’s come since.”
Advice for young and aspiring musicians
For young and aspiring musicians, he said, “Be original and do what you truly believe in. Do not get carried away by trends or the opinion of others. Be original, have courage and believe in yourself. In my opinion, there are some of the keys to success.”
Future plans
On his future plans, Öwnboss remarked, “I want to get in into the hall of fame of music and make my productions last. I hope that 100 years from now people somehow are still listening to my music.”
“I want my next songs to be the soundtrack of lives, to make a crowd of people happy just the way many tracks from other artists have made me feel to this day. That’s my plan,” he said.
Dream collaboration choices in music
Regarding his dream collaboration choices in music, he responded, “There are so many amazing artists in the world I’d like to work with… however, the one that came to mind right now is The Weeknd. He’s a master at what he does.”
Success
On his definition of success, he said, “I consider myself a successful person. I chase and have always chased my dreams in a fair and correct way. I have people that I love around me, I do what I love, and I know how to recognize all this and be grateful for it.”
“Success is not about numbers and money, you know? It’s more about a state of mind,” he added.
