Chatting with Long Island DJ Mike Savage: Behind the DJ booth (Includes interview)

Whether is a classic rock show, or a 90’s Night celebration, or anything in between, DJ Mike Savage is behind the DJ booth at Mulcahy’s Pub and Concert Hall on Long Island, and he knows how to get the crowd on their feet and engaged on the dance-floor. “It’s awesome. This place has a lot of history, and I love the fact that I don’t have to play one type of music each time that I spin. There are different bands that allow me to spin each genre of music. 90’s Night is my thing. We had Disco Unlimited, so I was playing disco. As a DJ, who loves music, I love to be able to play a variety of music, as opposed to be limited to one type of crowd each week,” he said.

Most recently, the Thanksgiving Eve Celebration took place at Mulcahy’s, which was a sold-out event, similar to the Hallowe’en party that was held last month. “The turnout was fantastic, and it was crazy,” he said. “It’s nice to play in front of a crowd that big.”

Each day, Savage is motivated by his family. “My family motivates me of course, as well as the fact that I get to play in front of a big crowd, and I get to rock the venue to get the party going. I’m basically the soundtrack of the party,” he said.

For aspiring DJs, Savage said, “Learn the craft. Study the history of DJing. Don’t just think you are going to play some EDM music and that you are going to be a DJ. Don’t think you know it all, since there are a lot of people that have mastered the craft. Work hard. Work on mixing and blending.”
