Chatting with Lenka Padysakova: Costume designer of the thriller ‘Off the Grid’

Costume designer Lenka Padysakova chatted about her work in the new action thriller “Off the Grid,” directed by Johnny Martin, and starring Josh Duhamel, Greg Kinnear, and Maria Elisa Camargo.

Costume designer Lenka Padysakova chatted about her work in the new action thriller “Off the Grid,” directed by Johnny Martin, and starring Josh Duhamel, Greg Kinnear, and Maria Elisa Camargo.

French poet and novelist Anatole France once said: “To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe.” This quote applies to Lenka Padysakova.

Padysakova took some time from her busy schedule to speak with this journalist while on set on another project. “Busy times but it’s definitely good,” she said with a sweet laugh.

“Off the Grid” is in theaters, On Demand, and on digital as of June 27, 2025.

‘Off the Grid’ thriller

On being a part of the crime action film “Off the Grid,” she remarked, “I was honored to work with such talents as Josh Duhamel ,Greg Kinnear, and Peter Stormare. This is the most collaborative movie I’ve ever done… it was fabulous.”

Padysakova described “Off the Grid” as a great collaboration between everyone involved. “The director Johnny Martin, and all the actors had their input. It all felt very organic,” she admitted. “Josh is seriously the best! He is open to your ideas and input.”

Favorite part of the experience

When asked to select her favorite part of that experience, she recalled, “When Greg Kinnear called the director Johnny after a fitting with me and he told him how wonderful the fitting was, and that everything about his character was as he imagined his character Ranish to be.”

Working with the cast, filmmakers, and crew

On working with the cast, filmmakers, and crew, she stated, “They are all so easy to work with. Josh is a dream lead actor. We had a real fun creating Guy.”

“What they have all in common is that they trusted me, and they gave me creative freedom,” she added. 

The digital age

On being a costume designer in the digital age, at a time when streaming, technology, and social media are so prevalent, she responded, “I feel like the content is more accessible, and the relationship between creatives and audience has gotten closer.”

“People can connect through social media and share the process,” she noted.

Advice for young and emerging costume designers

For young and aspiring costume designers, she said, “Learn and study as much as you can. Take it all in. Learn how to sketch, how to sew, and how to research.”

“Every trade and language you know help make you a better designer,” she added.

Speaking of languages, she is fluent in English, Slovak, and also speaks Czech, Italian and German.

Success

Regarding her definition of the word success, she shared, “Success, for me, is to be acknowledged, appreciated and admired.”

For fans and viewers, she expressed, “I hope this film inspires people to want to dress like Josh Duhamel or any other character.”
