Stand-up comedian and actress Emma Willmann chatted being an entertainer in the digital age.
Willmann made her televised stand up debut on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” and she had a recurring role as Beth in “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” on The CW.
Performing at Joanne Trattoria
On Monday, June 16th, she performed a headlining comedic set at Joanne Trattoria in New York City.
On performing at Joanne Trattoria at the Upper West Side, Willman said, “I am so excited. I am such a big fan; I’ve walked outside of it so many times, so it’s a treat to be in here.”
“The fans can expect awesome food, great ambiance, and from the comedy performance, I am talking about trying to be healthy, keeping up with everything, and a whole bunch of crazy family stories,” Willmann elaborated.
“The fans can expect a good time, and they won’t hear words they don’t already know,” Willmann added.
The digital age
On being a comic in the digital age, Willmann said, “It’s an everchanging landscape. Social media makes sense for entertainers because it’s an extension of what they are doing anyway.”
“I feel bad for chiropractors and dermatologists who didn’t sign up for this. They went to med school, and now they need to learn how to tap dance so they can be entertaining while they cut your cysts open. I feel bad for them vs. performers, who get paid to do this,” she explained.
“As a consumer, I love social media,” she admitted. “I am probably logging 50 hours a week on my phone, but it’s fun and it gives a lot of new opportunities.”
Advice for young and emerging comedians
For young and aspiring comics, Willman said, “My actual advice is to focus on stand-up first, get good and comfortable, and figure out what you want to talk about. Then, learn how to edit videos and start posting on social media.”
“Doing stand-up takes time, so try to build up a stand-up act. Roseanne once said: ‘Don’t move to LA until your material sings.’ You can start posting before your material sings, but use that as a reference,” Willman elaborated.
Willmann defines success
Regarding her definition of the word success, Willmann remarked, “Success means leverage to do whatever creative projects you want.”
Comedic set
Emma Willmann’s comedic set at Joanne Trattoria, which spanned nearly an hour, was upbeat, witty, clever, entertaining, and a great deal of fun. She poked fun of vegans, fitness, dieting, her landlord, therapists, turning 40, and even Hillary Clinton (in a playful manner). She is worth checking out whenever she comes to perform in town.
