Chatting with David Cook: Rock star, former American Idol winner (Includes interview)

“Honestly, I love coming here. To be able to perform here is pretty chill. The new Stage 17 is great,” he said, about performing for 95.5 PLJ’s newly renovated in-studio stage.

On July 10, Cook headlined the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn, New York. “It was a great room. The crowd was fantastic, and it was our first time performing in Brooklyn. To get to go to another borough was really nice,” he said.

For Cook, technology has been an integral part of his daily routines. “The first thing I do when I wake up is check my phone. My day starts with technology, and as we go through the day, especially out here on tour, technology plays a huge role. We have our backing tracks and string section, so we have plenty of technology going on,” he said.

On the effects of technology on the music industry, Cook noted that “the proof is in the pudding.” “Technology is changing the guard when it comes to how people are consuming music. Everything is trying to find the white whale that is going to bring the industry back to the financial heights that it used to be at. What I love about it more than anything right now is that it’s everybody’s game. Some 14-year-old working on their computer in their basement is going to come up with the next best thing,” he said.

The song selection process for his new studio album involved Cook experimenting with new sounds, and going in a new musical direction. “It was about finding songs that resonated with me, and songs that I felt I could do justice to no matter what the format was,” he said.

His plans for the future are to continue to make and release more music for his dedicated fans. His latest single, “Gimme Heartbreak,” is available on iTunes.
