In just over four decades, actor Barry Corbin has acted in hundreds of movies and TV Shows. These include There’s Lonesome Dove, Urban Cowboy, War Games, No Country for Old Men, and The Ranch, among many others. “I try to keep a good balance between comedy and drama,” he said.
In the future, hopefully in 2021, he is looking forward to doing an “Evening with Barry Corbin” in various cities and towns. This will include a live question and answer (Q&A) session with the fans, as well as showing clips from his movie and TV shows. “I am looking forward to that,” he said. “It’s pretty informal. We will begin with some film clips, covering some of the highlights of my career, and I will come out and talk a little about my life, and then, we will have questions from the audience, as long as they want to ask me questions.”
Throughout his career, he earned three Primetime Emmy nominations, two of which were for his acting work in Northern Exposure. “That was very good. I enjoyed Northern Exposure up until the last season, where it got a bit strange,” he said.
On being an actor in the digital age, he said, “It doesn’t affect my business too much, but it’s certainly a different market. It changes the pay rate these days since they are unable to pay what they used to pay although there is more work so it all evens out. I like to keep working so that’s a good thing.”
For young and aspiring actors, he said, “I always tell the kids and colleagues that if they can do anything else and be happy, then you are better off doing that. Acting is very competitive, and you will spend most of your time looking for work rather than working.”
Regarding the key to longevity in acting and entertainment, he noted that it’s essential for one to keep reinventing themselves. “You need to keep up with the times, and you need to keep up with your age too,” he said.
“To start with, it takes a lot of luck. You need to keep your health and keep your ability to work a long day. I’m not going to retire anytime soon. I’m doing pretty good for an 80-year-old man, I’m doing fine,” he said with a sweet laugh.
On his definition of the word success, Corbin remarked, “Success is my family, my kids, my grandkids, and my great-grandkids. “That’s success to me,” he said. “As long as I can keep working, career-wise, I feel like I am doing good. I need to keep working for my family.”
For his loyal fans, he said, “Thank you, and keep on watching because I have new things in the works and I will keep throwing them at you.”
