On March 18, actors Kel Mitchell (“All That”), Stacey Dash (“Clueless”) and Dorian Gregory (“Charmed”) chatted at the red carpet at 90s Con, which took place at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford.
“It feels awesome to be here,” Mitchell said about the fan convetion. “I love seeing all of the fans and all of the ’90s outfits. It’s awesome.”
The digital age
On being an actor and comedian in the digital age, Mitchell said, “It’s great. With social media, you can reach people all over the world. It is really awesome.”
“It is amazing that everybody has access to be creative,” Gregory said. “Being able to have immediate contact with the world, which is available to anybody, is great. This is such a time, and I am curious to see where this will go,” Gregory added.
On being an actress in the digital age, Dash said with a sweet laugh, “I think it’s really strange… is that weird? I’m old, I’m Generation X, so I can’t even figure out my TikToks.”
Advice young and aspiring actors
For young and aspiring actors, Mitchell said, “Consistency is key. Also, when one door closes another one opens. Keep your positivity and keep going. You got this.”
“Just do, pick up and do,” Gregory said. “Right now, there are no barriers for anything that you want to do. The advice is not new, pick up a phone, a mic, and record, and put it online, and just do. If it’s good, it will find you.”
“Learn a method in acting that works for you. My acting coach also told me: ‘make sure that it’s the only thing — that there is nothing else you can possibly do — except be an actor because that’s how much work it takes, and rejection that you have to go through, and you just have to persevere.”
Career-defining moments
On his career-defining moments, Mitchell shared, “Learning that there are no mistakes, just lessons, and growing within this business and learning that it’s a team effort: I started to direct, write, and produce so that I can I understand the team better.”
Gregory noted that his career-defining moments include “Charmed,” “Soul Train” and doing voiceover for “Obi-Wan Kenobi.” “These were defining moments for me, and now, I am looking for the next one,” Gregory said.
Success
On his definition of success, Mitchell said, “Success means your heart. Success really comes down to your heart. If you are a horrible person, then you are not going to have much success.”
“For me, success means being happy,” Gregory said. “I don’t care where you are or what you are doing, success means being happy.”
“Success means having love in my life,” Dash said.
For his fans, Mitchell expressed his gratitude. “”God bless you all. You can do it. Thank you, you are not just fans, you are family,” he exclaimed.
