Catching up with Tom Johnston of The Doobie Brothers (Includes interview)

This show was part of the Laid Back Festival, where they shared the stage with Gregg Allman, the founding member of The Allman Brothers, as well as singer-songwriter Lara Johnston.

On performing at the Nikon at Jones Beach Theater, Johnston said, “I am looking forward to it. We play Jones Beach every year, and we look forward to duet with Gregg and company. We have been on the road with them anyway.”

Their Southbound album was released on Sony Music Nashville in November of 2014 and it reached the Top 10 on the Billboard Top Country Albums charts, as well as the Top 20 on the Billboard 200 all-genre charts. “It has been an interesting album,” Johnston said. “Working with all those people was a lot of fun.”

Southbound featured musical collaborations with such country artists as Zac Brown Band, Blake Shelton, Hunter Hayes, Sara Evans, Toby Keith, Love and Theft, Brad Paisley and Casey James, where they lent their voices on hit singles by The Doobie Brothers.

Regarding their plans for the future, he said, “We are going to do another album, but not right this second. We got more road-work to do.”

Each day, Johnston is motivated by his desire to play music and to interact with different crowds. “We have been very fortunate in that the people want to hear what we are doing. We have plenty of gigs, and people are showing up to hear them,” he said.

For his fans, he concluded, “Keep coming to the shows. We really enjoy playing for the people. They have been great to us.”
