This was part of “Rally for Equality: Love Rules,” where he went on to perform three of his songs from his newest studio album, All-American Boy, which included “We Are The Night,” “Stay” and the title track.
On being a part of Lambda Legal’s event, he said, “It was a big honor considering we are on the eve of such a landmark Supreme Court decision, probably one of the most important decisions regarding the rights of LGBT people that the Supreme Court will make in a very long time. Certainly, the fight is not over after this. It is quite an honor to be here at this time, and be asked to play for all these people that do so much for our community.”
Regarding the success of his breakthrough studio album, he said, “I am so happy and so grateful. The people are obviously really liking it and the music is resonating with them.”
When asked about his musical journey, Grand revealed, “I started playing piano when I was six, and I grew up in the suburbs. I went to Nashville for my freshman year in college at Belmont University, and I wanted to be a rock star, but it wasn’t going to be done by getting a degree from it, and certainly it was a lot of money, so I moved back home and worked on music, and continued to record music on my own. Every day I would write and record and show my friends, and they were very honest. Then, it would make me better and go back and revisit things. To me, it was always about trying to really convey the way that I felt in a way that resonated with other people, and those are the stars that have to align for a great song, and that’s what I strive for. It’s an incredible art form, and it’s what I am here to do because there is no formula for that.”
The humble singer concluded, “I could never say ‘thank you’ enough for allowing me to live out my dream, and for giving me this platform to be heard. Through my music, I am making all of our voices heard, and that’s what it’s about for me. You can’t hope for anything more than that as a singer-songwriter.”
