Catching up with pop star Andy Grammer: ‘Honey, I’m Good’ (Includes interview)

Regarding his latest single, “Honey, I’m Good,” he said, “That feels incredible. It is amazing to have a song go this high. It is all kind of new, fresh and exciting.”

“Honey, I’m Good” is making its way up the Billboard Hot 100 charts, sitting at No. 11, and it has been certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Grammer co-wrote the tune with Nolan Sipe.

His lead single, “Back Home” was yet another infectious single from his critically-acclaimed Magazines or Novels studio album. “I love that song. It has gotten some resurgence ever since we performed it on American Idol with Nick Fradiani, the guy who won. It was cool to see it get a little more love,” he said.

On performing “Back Home” and “Honey, I’m Good” on the American Idol stage with Nick Fradiani, Grammer had nothing but great words for the Season 14 winner of the reality singing competition. “Nick is awesome. He is going to go far. He’s got the thing,” Grammer said, praising Fradiani.

Another stand-out song for Grammer from his latest album is “Blame It on the Stars,” especially since it fares well during his live show. “I wrote over 100 songs for this album, so each one that made it on there holds a special place in my heart, but everybody seems to like the song ‘Blame It on the Stars’ a lot,” he said. “I love the fans and I didn’t want to let them down, that’s why I wrote 100 songs.”

Regarding his plans for the future, he said, “We have a tour with American Authors, which should be really fun. I am pretty much out right now doing a ton of shows. It’s fun to be out when all this excitement is happening. I get to see everybody freak out every night, and I get to freak out with them. It has been a dream.”

On June 15, Grammer will be headlining Gramercy Theatre in New York City, where he will be performing with New York-based indie-pop band AJR. “It is coming up in New York City, and we are excited. The show sold out so quickly,” he said.

Grammer had the pleasure to tour with Rachel Platten, and he extolled the rising songstress for her talent. “Rachel is like family to me at this point,” he said.

At last year’s show at Irving Plaza in New York City, Grammer shared the stage with Andrew Ripp, who opened the show for him. “Andrew is incredible. I love that guy. That was my second time going on tour with him. He has such an amazing voice,” he said.

He listed “All About That Bass” songstress Meghan Trainor as his dream female duet choice. “I love her song ‘All About That Bass.’ It is so good, and I think it would be pretty cool to do something well together,” he said.

In his spare time, Grammer enjoys “reading and playing basketball.”

For hopefuls who wish to make it in the music industry, he noted that they should have their own point of view. “Sing something that only you can sing about, and do more than you can talk about doing,” he said.

Grammer defined success as “Creating a song that will actually touch somebody in some way.” “When that runs its course, you need to figure out how to be successful again, and create something new and then show that to people. Even if you have success at the moment, you need to always be working on it, and make sure that your song and your show will do some service to somebody,” he said.
