The Hollywood Foreign Press voters have spoken, and they honored Affleck with the accolade for his portrayal of Lee Chandler in Manchester by the Sea. The film was written and directed by Kenneth Lonergan.

Affleck bested such nominees in the “Best Actor in a Drama” category as Joel Edgerton in Loving, Andrew Garfield in Hacksaw Ridge, Viggo Mortensen in Captain Fantastic, as well as Denzel Washington in Fences.

In his acceptance speech, Affleck thanked the Hollywood Foreign Press, his director, Lonergan, as well as his co-star Michelle Williams , whom he praised for making most of the film work. “She’s perfect,” he admitted, and he expressed his gratitude to everybody that helped make this movie a reality, especially his co-producer and friend, actor Matt Damon. He finally thanked his family, including his two children.
