Singer-songwriter Caroline Jones chatted with Digital Journal’s Markos Papadatos about her new single “Come In (But Don’t Make Yourself Comfortable)” and her inspirations. She also revealed her dream duet choices in music.

On her new single, Jones said, “The song started as a bit of a joke. I just blurted out the phrase ‘come in but don’t make yourself comfortable’ in the studio one day to one of my guys as a joke, and I immediately wanted to check to see if there was a country song written about it since it’s rare these days to find a phrase that hasn’t been written into a country song.”

“I didn’t find anything and I thought it would be a fun and sassy song to write,” she said. “I wrote the first two verses, posted them on Instagram, and I got a really good response, and then a couple of weeks later I finished the song. Then, we recorded it and it is now my single.”

“It is such a fun and sassy song. I am really proud of its energy. I want the fans to listen to it and to dance to it,” she added.

Regarding her music and songwriting inspirations, she said, “I am influenced by a lot of my heroes. I grew up listening to a lot of singer-songwriter music and folk music. Then, I discovered country music and at 17 years old, I went to Nashville for the first time, and that really inspired me.”

Jones listed Hank Williams, Willie Nelson, Vince Gill, Keith Urban, and Emmylou Harris as some of her greatest musical influences. “These days, I have an indescribable passion for the craft of music,” she said. “I am driven to make the best music that I can. It’s like falling in love, you don’t always know why, you are just drawn to someone and that’s how I’ve always felt about music.”

On being an artist in the digital age, Jones said, “It’s a really interesting time to navigate. I think now is probably the best time to be an artist because there is so much more freedom than there has ever been in terms of the ability to choose your career path. There are just more options and opportunities for artists. There is more responsibility on the artist because there are more options, which is ultimately good for creativity.”

“Also, there are a lot of drawbacks to social media, they can be extremely distracting and disheartening but the benefits outweigh the costs ultimately,” she added.

She shared that her dream duet choices in music include Keith Urban, Vince Gill, and Day + Shay.

On her definition of the word success, Jones said, “The freedom and feeling like you’ve worked your way and earned your way enough to be able to create the music that is authentic to you, and to express what is in your heart musically.”
