Digital Journal — A portrait artist based in Rama, Ont., Travis Shilling seeks to capture a subject’s essence on canvas.
A full-time painter since 16, the 25-year-old has showcased his work at various galleries in Toronto.
He honed his craft at the Toronto School of Art.
Distinct achievement:
The Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., commissioned a pen-and-ink sketch that is still mounted in the venerable museum.
Technique:.
Oil on canvas portraits of people (mostly women) that are shaded with dark, brooding tones.
The context often bleeds into his life, as he says: “It’s more about living the art than doing it.”
Why women?: “They give birth, they create, so they should be respected above everyone else. Also, women have a deeper connection to Earth, in a spiritual aspect.”
