Canaan Smith launches ‘Smash Cancer’ initiative for St. Jude

A Mercury Nashville recording artist, Smith announced his latest charitable initiative, “Smash Cancer,” in support of the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, which treats pediatric cancer and other life-threatening diseases.

Earlier this year, while on stage, Smith had the sudden urge to smash something. After seeing the overwhelming response from his country fans, he was inspired to help one of the charities that he is most passionate about: the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. “While it was fun destroying that drum at the end of our set, we didn’t know what to do with it,” Smith said in a press release.

Smith added that it is a “crazy and rewarding” feeling to be able to make music and to give back to charity. The country star autographs a drum and auctions it off after each show to fans in attendance, in an effort to raise money for St. Jude’s.

Prior to this launch, “Smash Cancer” had raised approximately $20,000 for the hospital, and it subsequently caught the attention of Guitar Center. The instrument retailer donated a considerable number of drum sets and guitars to the initiative.

Most recently, Smith was surprised at the CMA Music Festival stage in Nashville with a plaque for the platinum-certification of his chart-topping single “Love You Like That.”
