Call of Duty tweeted fake terroist attack to promote game

On Tuesday, the official Twitter account was re-branded as Current Events Aggregate and began tweeting about a fictional terrorist attack taking place in Singapore. Follow-up tweets described it as an attack at a chemical facility along with riots taking placed and Martial Law being declared.

Even though it was a quick marketing gimmick to promote the Black Ops III story, many gamers and those in the media were not amused. Many felt the tweets were either an odd way to promote the story or were in very poor taste since it was unclear that the messages were about the game.

This outrage was best seen on the games official Twitter page along with message boards like N4G.

This is not the first time that a publisher had an attack to promote a game. Back in 2010; Ubisoft stirred controversy when a promotion for Splinter Cell: Conviction resulted in a police response.

Call of Duty: Black Ops III will be the twelfth game in the popular series and the fourth game in the World at War / Black Ops-story arch. The game will be released on November 6, 2015 for all Next-Gen consoles and the PC.
