Caleb Johnson talks ‘Testify’ album, ‘Fighting Gravity’ and tour (Includes interview)

Regarding his new single “Fighting Gravity,” Johnson said, “Last year, I was working on my album and that song was the first one that I wrote for the album. I co-wrote it with two great writers, Brian Howes and Lenny Skolnik. I was on the road last year performing that song, and people would come up to me after the show and say that it really got them through a hard time. It was a song of comfort for people, since it revolved around the loss of loved ones, and it was a huge honor for me to get that feedback and response from people. As an artist, that is a huge accomplishment.”

His song’s music video for “Fighting Gravity” deals with a young boy that was diagnosed with a rare form of pediatric cancer. “It was a really powerful and haunting moment in my life, walking in that room and seeing the boy and his mother. I really wanted to tell that story and show people what I felt in that room,” he said. “It was an amazing and wonderful experience to film that music video, since it took a life of its own.”

Johnson’s album Testify consisted mostly of songs that he co-wrote, and he listed the title track, “Let Me In” and “Devil’s Daughter” as three of his favorites on there.

His first headlining tour will kick off on May 2 in Cherokee, North Carolina, which will be an exciting experience for Johnson. “Tickets are on sale now. It’s going to be awesome I will be bringing these songs to life, and I will be bringing the rock and roll sound to the masses,” he said.

On winning American Idol, he said, “It was a surreal experience. You are in a state of euphoria, where everything is going really fast, and you are trying to process it all. It was just a wild trip, but a lot of fun.”

He listed Lzzy Hale from Halestorm, Lady Gaga, as well as the “Queen of Soul” Aretha Franklin as his dream female duet choices.
