Actor Brooks Darnell (“The Young and The Restless” and “Shadowhunters”) chatted with Digital Journal’s Markos Papadatos about his upcoming film “Advice to Love By” on the Hallmark Channel, which premieres on October 16 as part of the “Fall Harvest” programming event.

Heather Hawthorn-Doyle directed the film from a script by Erin Rodman.

Synopsis of ‘Advice to Love By’

Darnell stars in “Advice to Love By” opposite Erinn Westbrook (“Riverdale”). She plays nationally renowned “love advice” author Kendall, who suffers a career plunge with the release of her new book. “Erinn was great to work with. She was always upbeat and positive,” he said. “Erinn just brought her character to life, I think the viewers will love the movie.”

During a book signing, she runs into magazine writer Nathan (Brooks Darnell). What Kendall doesn’t know is that Nathan is her competition; he secretly pens the
city’s go-to advice column under the name “The Dating Doc.”

When an unexpected attraction between Kendall and Nathan begins to blossom into something more substantial, both start using strategies from their respective playbooks in an effort to win the other over. Can the dueling dating dynamos find love, at last, in each other’s arms?

On playing Nathan, he said, “It was quite funny to play Nathan. He is extremely fun, that’s his personality in the whole movie. He goes by his heart and he is a big proponent of extravagant gestures of love.”

He is drawn to the Hallmark Channel and doing Hallmark movies due to its positivity, and the fact that one can always tune in to a movie and “feel love, hope, and positivity.” “We have enough drama and negativity in our lives and on the news, so it’s good to tune in to the Hallmark Channel to be able to escape reality,” he said.

On being an actor in the digital age, he said, “It feels good. There are more outlets and more viewers to see our movies. It is easier viewing and it’s good for the network and for us, actors.”

Regarding his daily motivations as an actor, he said, “I am motivated by the love of what I do. I love embodying different characters and creating different personalities. I love getting across empathy in my craft.”

He opened up about “Shadowhunters” and “The Young and The Restless.” “It was wonderful, we shot it in Toronto. ‘Shadowhunters’ was fun, you got to delve into a whole new world. I love every minute of ‘Shadowhunters’,” he said.

“I equate ‘The Young and The Restless’ to playing sports. There was something different every day. It was fast and you get curveballs,” he said. “It was a lesson on love, emotion, camerawork, and building. The show taught me a lot.”

On the title of the current chapter of his life, he responded, “Building and Juggling.”

For young and aspiring actors, he encouraged them to “fall in love with what they do.” “If you love it and fall in love with it, you will be fine,” he said.

If he were to do any track and field event, he shared that he would run the 110 meter hurdles.

Darnell defined the word success as “the ability to be happy in what you do stressfree, and great food.” “If you have all of those things, you will have peace of mind,” he said.

For his fans and supporters, he concluded about “Advice to Love By,” “Don’t be opposed to someone else’s opinion.”
