British actor Matthew Wolf talks about ‘The Royals’ on E! (Includes interview)

On being on E!’s The Royals, Wolf said, “It’s a lot of fun. Mark Schwann is a great creator and director, and it’s a very focused shoot. Playing Jeffrey Stuart has been really interesting because his emotional pain and need for revenge goes back to his childhood. As a damaged character, he’s fun to play. Those kind of characters always are.”

Regarding his plans for 2016, he said, “Someone asked me recently what I plan to ‘conquer’ in 2016, which I think is a great way of saying it; well, firstly I’m looking forward to having a great year with our new-ish baby girl so conquering being the best father I can be would be one thing. I hope to be coming back for more on The Royals, which has been picked up for another season. And there are a few other really great projects that I’ve been talking about that could happen this year, which generally means conquering the world of television. No pressure, then.”

His New Year’s resolutions include taking time to relax when possible and having a good relationship with family. “Good karma gives you peace of mind, so you can go about doing other things calmly,” he said.

For Wolf, voicing Thor was a fun experience. “The Thor films I did for Marvel were really a pleasure to do. I definitely felt a certain amount of pressure to do something that the fans would like, as the Marvel fan base tends to have a pretty clear idea of what they want to see in their beloved characters. I really wanted to do that devotion justice. There will always be some who don’t like what I did, but generally I think it was popular. There was a website comparing all the actors that have voiced Thor and I was somewhere between the middle and the top, which isn’t too bad,” he said.

He listed acting queen Meryl Streep as his dream acting partner. “So it has to be almost every actor’s dream to work opposite her. She is terrifyingly good, so it must somewhat intimidating, but I’d be happy to have that experience. Emma Thompson is another. I did a radio production recently of ‘A View From the Bridge’ opposite Melissa Benoist (Supergirl), which I absolutely loved. She has a natural instinct for truth as an actress that keeps everyone around her grounded. That’s a gift. And my wife is an incredible actress. We’ve worked together a few times, and hopefully there will be more opportunities,” he said.

Each day, Wolf is motivated by his wife and little daughter. “My daughter smiles at absolutely everything and everyone, and seeing her purity and untainted joy at the world is incredible. To provide an amazing and comfortable life for them is so important to me. And to do good work, projects that I want to give 100 percent to,” he said.

For aspiring actors, he concluded, “Well, every actor tends to have a great piece of advice that was given to them, which should always be passed on, so here’s mine. It was given to me by Michael Caine just as I was starting out; he said ‘Go into live theatre first, otherwise you won’t know timing from a live audience’ and that’s exactly what I did. For some actors it just doesn’t happen that way, they get picked up for a TV show or film very early on, but I think the point is to remember that nothing you do is in a vacuum. It’s for an audience, sometimes of millions, and how they respond is what it’s all about. Otherwise, I’d say aim high and never be afraid of your own personality, no matter how crazy or strong. That’s what people respond to most!”
