Rising artist Bradley Kim released his heartfelt and beautiful single “High School,” where he collaborated with Liam Hull. Digital Journal has the scoop.
Kim is not afraid to be raw and vulnerable on this tune, and it ought to be enjoyed for its beauty and its simplicity. Kim penned “High School” while he was reflecting on his experiences as a closeted athlete while in high school. It showcases him wrestling inner LGBTQ struggles.
He allows his rich, velvet voice to shine on this song. Melodically and vocally, the listener can slightly recall Justin Bieber’s “Love Yourself,” and that should be taken as a major compliment.
Kim always thought that his reputation, his family’s reputation, his sports team’s dynamic, and his friendships would be ruined if anyone knew the truth about him, so he shielded part of who he was from everyone. Kim was subsequently featured in USA Today and Washington Post as he was the first openly gay athlete at a service academy.
The lyrics illustrate his inward struggle to fit in with the rest of his peers who went out to parties and hooked up with people that they were “supposed to” hook up with. It references all the nights he spent laying in his bed feeling helpless and longing for the day that he could leave the nightmare in which he was living. While it may come from a melancholic place, it has an optimistic message to it, and it will resonate with his audience.
