“My overall experience of the fifth season was one of a feeling of getting to tighten the screws on the truth, while at the same time feeling an increasing uneasiness, or dread, some sense of impending darkness,” he said. “Interesting and oddly satisfying. In short, I loved it.”
McGiver shared that working with Oscar winner Kevin Stacey was an “actor’s dream,” prior to praising him for his pure work ethic. “It was serious razor-edged fun, and smiles,” he said, prior to revealing that his proudest professional moments happened on this film. “Working with Kevin Spacey, David Fincher, Robin Wright, Beau Willemon, Melissa James Gibson, and all of the writers, as well as Netflix on this show. Shit, I am pretty darned happy,” he admitted.
His plans for the future are to keep working as an actor. On his daily motivations, he said, “Waking up and knowing that I am supremely blessed to have this life and career, so doing good work that makes people think, being kind, and remembering to remain grateful.”
For aspiring actors, his advice is as follows: “Acting is an art. It starts with some talent, but it goes nowhere without training and discipline. Find a good set of teachers, or a good school. Keep working. Don’t be satisfied. Think your way through a scene. Don’t try to feel your way through. Feelings are always secondary. They come after we think and react. Not the other way around. Pay attention to the script first always. Do the thought work, and then let the sled go and enjoy the ride of your work with your collaborators. Always say ‘yes’ first to others’ choices.”
Regarding his experience on Lincoln, he said, “I didn’t get to do scenes with Daniel Day-Lewis or Sally Field, but it was an absolute joy to work with Steven Spielberg. He is the epitome of grace and kindness, especially when you remember he is Steven Spielberg. I would do anything for him again. And that movie in particular. I am pretty proud to have been a part of it, to tell that story. It is a way to put a pinprick of light through the wall of darkness that has been our slave-owning/racist past here in this country. I am happy to have added a tiny, tiny bit to that.”
