On Saturday, June 7th, pop singer-songwriter Bonnie McKee chatted with this journalist on the Tribeca Film Festival red carpet at Spring Studios in Manhattan about her new music video for “Forever 21.”

Tribeca Film Festival

On being a part of the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival in New York, McKee said, “I could not be happier. This is a dream come true; I never expected to get into Tribeca. I submitted because I just wanted them to watch it, but I didn’t think they would call me back.”

“In fact, when I first got the email I ignored it because I thought it was a scam, and then, I got a voicemail and it turned out to be real. I cannot believe that I am here,” she acknowledged.

“I am so grateful and I am so over the moon excited,” she noted.

‘Forever 21’ music video

In the “Forever 21” music video, McKee is always the bridesmaid, never the bride. Bonnie attends her best friend’s wedding with disastrous results.

It was co-directed by McKee and David Richardson, and it portrays McKee as the ultimate hot mess.

On the concept for the music video, McKee said, “It was a lot of hard work, and lots of amazing friends doing favors. I cast 30 of my friends and everybody came in, and we made it work. It was a 12 hour shoot. Miraculously, we made it happen.”

“I am really proud of the edit that I did because telling a story without dialogue is a really fun challenge,” she admitted. “I want to shout out my co-director, David Richardson, who I wish could be here today, because it’s hard to direct yourself when you are in front of the camera.”

Stage of her life

On the title of the current chapter of her life, McKee revealed, “Level Up, Baby.”

Success

Regarding her definition of the word success, McKee said, “Success means connecting with people. It used to mean being No. 1 but now it means making a living doing what I love, and I mean that from the bottom of my heart.”

“Forever 21” is featured on her latest studio offering “Hot City,” which was released back in May of 2024.

Closing thoughts on the ‘Forever 21’ music video

For fans and viewers, she concluded about the video, “I want people to be entertained, and I want them to see music videos as art, and not just content. Being here at Tribeca has really validated that for me.”
