A few weeks ago, their concert that was originally scheduled at Mulcahy’s got cancelled due to inclement weather conditions. The line-up for last night featured Mike DelGuidice on piano and lead vocals, Tommy Byrnes on lead guitar, Carmine Giglio on keyboards, Mike Sorrentino on drums, Nick Dimichino on bass, and John Scarpulla on saxophone.
They opened their set with the infectious “Miami 2017 (Seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway),” where he appropriately changed the opening lyrics to “we held a concert out in Wantagh,” which received an enormous response, as yellow lights dimmed from the stage.
It was followed by “Movin’ Out,” where white lights graced the stage. “Mulcahy’, how we doing?” DelGuidice asked. “Good to be back,” he added, after noting the snowfall at the last show, which lead to its cancellation. “It’s a great audience tonight,” DelGuidice exclaimed.
They followed it up with “Say Goodbye to Hollywood,” which included a killer sax solo, and the same was true for “New York State of Mind.” The ballad “This is the Time” was filled with nostalgia, and it was great to hear his own original recording “Ordinary Guy,” which is featured in the hit television series, Kevin Can Wait.
“Are there any classic rock people in the audience?” DelGuidice asked, prior to singing Aerosmith’s “Dream On,” where he displayed his piercing high notes towards the end. Equally impressive was their full band version of “The Downeaster Alexa,” which had a beautiful echo effect to it.
“Piano Man” was a fun sing-along with Steven Fileti on harmonica, and “Scenes From an Italian Restaurant” was stunning as always.
The Verdict
Overall, Big Shot was as strong as ever during their first show at Mulcahy’s this year. All six musicians (DelGuidice, Byrnes, Dimichino, Sorrentino, Giglio and Scarpulla) were at the top of their game musically. They always do Billy Joel’s songs justice. They garnered an A for an excellent job.
