Badflower talks new single ‘Ghost,’ record deal and Cyndi Lauper (Includes interview)

On their new single “Ghost,” Katz said, “The song was written right after we go off tour. I was in a very dark place in my life as you can tell from the lyrics. I had a specific idea that I wanted to play out in this song, and I did it.”

Badflower just inked a record deal with Big Machine Records/John Varvatos Records. “That felt really great. It is our third record label that we have been on. It has been a very tedious process from the industry side of things, so it is great to be with a label that really cares,” Katz said.

His plans for the future with Badflower include a lot more touring and a lot more songwriting. “My songwriting is inspired by life and everything,” he said. “I like writing as real as possible. I like to feel emotionally connected to the music myself.”

Katz listed Cyndi Lauper as his dream female duet choice in the music industry. “I would love to write another big song with Cyndi Lauper, which may be impossible. Cyndi is so great,” he said.

For aspiring musicians, Katz said, “Stop focusing on the things you don’t have, and the milestones that you are trying to achieve. Write really good songs and perform them really well. Make sure you are unique. Stop worrying about your YouTube views and your Instagram followers. All of those things are irrelevant unless you have great songs.”

Digital transformation of the music business

On the impact of technology on the music business, Katz said, “Technology has changed it a lot. Personally, I am not against the way that things are now. I don’t really mind that singles are bigger than albums. I don’t mind that bands aren’t making that much money since we get to live our dreams. It is not a big deal. The part about technology that I can embrace is that anybody with talent can easily reach an audience without having to rely on a record label. If your song is great, people will find it. The playing field is now even.”

Regarding his use of technology in his daily routine as a musician, Katz said, “I write while I record. I have a home studio set-up. I am not a pen and paper guy. I will literally set up my entire studio, and start recording, as I am writing music, so I am making demos constantly. I don’t know if I could do what I do now without a computer. It will be a very different band if I didn’t have that.”

For their fans, Katz concluded about “Ghost,” “Thank you for listening and thank you for understanding and for connecting with the song. The content is heavy, but thank you for embracing the realness.”
