Tori Darke first came to the attention of music fans everywhere in March 2009 with a self-titled, six-track debut EP that featured her first ever single “Crawl.” Since then, her fanbase has continued to grow in her native Australia, the United States and especially, it seems, in Canada.
To date, the Sydney-based beauty has put out three singles from her new album, the aforementioned Silver Lining (recorded at FX Productions in Queensland and produced by Andrew Cochrane). They are “Disposable,” “So Gone” and the impressive title track, which was released on November 20.
“‘Silver Lining’ is a song I really love,” enthuses Tori. “It’s got a really great message that it sends across and it was written by a few good friends of mine in Nashville. I felt very privileged to record this song and to name my album after it.”
Of the 11 tracks on the CD, Ms. Darke co-wrote four. How would she say this album differs from her first? “I guess there’s been a big progression for me, in the sense that I’m a few years older and it’s more mature than the last one,” she muses. “It’s got a bit more substance, it’s very personal and I definitely think you can see the growth in me as an artist.”
“There’s a lot of different ones, anything from having a broken heart to being in love,” she continues, discussing the themes addressed this time around, “to writing a song about just me and my guitar going on a journey. I guess it’s a little bit more versatile this time…”
Not only has the album received rave reviews, but it also hit number one on the Australian ARIA Chart upon its release in February. If that wasn’t enough, Darke has also been nominated for Female Artist of The Year at next year’s CMAA Country Music Awards of Australia, which takes place every year in January at the Tamworth Festival.
“This is actually the first time I’ve been nominated,” she reveals, “and I’ll be performing in Tamworth as well. I’ve got one show there on Tuesday January 19 with Mick Lindsay.”
Commenting on her plans for 2016, Tori concludes, “Next year just to continue touring with the new album, keeping busy and probably getting back into the studio and recording some new music as well.”
