Country-pop singer-songwriter Andrew Mitch chatted about his new single “back home boy” (re-imagined).

How did the single ‘back home boy’ come about?

I wrote “back home boy” as a spin on one-night-stands. I wanted to use that same Friday night bar imagery, but turn the story to be about a wholesome gay love connection about taking someone to your hometown (and not your apartment).

I’ve always loved a play on words in country music, so this felt like the perfect opportunity to describe what a lot of gay men ultimately want: a faithful, loving partner that you want to take back home to meet your family.

What inspires your music and songwriting?

I have been able to draw inspiration from all sorts of things: lyrics I write, a melody I came up, or sometimes even an entire backtrack that doesn’t have any vocals yet. .

I just love creating and letting the creative process guide the music.

What do your plans for the future include?

We have plans for plenty more releases in 2025, a brand new album in 2026, touring… all sorts of fun things. I can’t wait to start unveiling it all!

How does it feel to be an artist in the digital age? (Now with streaming, technology and social media being so prevalent)

I love the intimate feeling of an in-person, live performance. But I’ve also found so much value in the digital connections too.

I honestly feel so grateful and blessed to live in an age where I can post videos from my bedroom that people all across the world can watch. It’s such a game changer!

What is your advice for young and emerging artists?

Whatever is on your heart, write that. Whatever you feel like posting, post that. Whatever is going through your mind, say that.

Don’t worry about criticism or pushback — just create what you personally love, and all the rest will follow. Authenticity always shines through your art.

What does the word success mean to you? (My favorite question)

My perception of “success” has been evolving over time. When it comes to music, I view success as the amount of connection you can have with other people. My very first song connected with thousands of people, right off the bat.

It didn’t get me a record deal or anything huge, but my DMs were full of real people who said my music inspired them to come out, that they were so thankful for an honest LGBT+ singer, and even that my song inspired them to propose to their partner and begin an adoption process together.

That connection, to me, is wildly successful.

What would you like to tell our readers about your new music? (what’s the one thing you want them to get out of it)

I describe my music as “a little country, a little pop. Kinda gay, kinda not.” I also say that sad songs are my love language.

So if you want some sad boy, LGBT, and pop-country, send me a message and let me know what you think!
