The competition is named after great Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and is held every four years. The former winners include famous American pianist Van Cliburn who won the top award at the height of the Cold War.
After a long deliberation, the international jury picked finalists in four categories: piano, cello, violin and voice. Among the pianists, Dmitry Masleev, the 27-year-old Russian, won first prize and a gold medal, and $30,000. And it’s worth mentioning that Dmitry Masleev selected a Steinway & Sons Model D piano, as the instrument of choice for the final round of judging to ensure the best sound quality.
This year Russian President Vladimir Putin was among the guests at the gala concert at the Moscow Conservatory. He called the Tchaikovsky competition “the pride of Russia.”
Valery Gergiev, co-chair of the Tchaikovsky competition organising committee and Mariinsky Theatre artistic director said: “Thanks to this Competition, the world has been introduced to some exceptional talents. Nowadays, both amateurs and professionals of classical music are ready to join us via the Internet, TV broadcasts, or any other form of media communication that one might only imagine.”
The 15th Tchaikovsky competition in Moscow was streamed live for free on medici.tv, receiving over six million views in the first two weeks of the broadcast.
