Canadian actor Allan Hawco (“Jack Ryan”) chatted about starring in the new movie “In Cold Light,” which was released via Saban Films.

Maxime Giroux directed from a screenplay by Patrick Whistler. Hawco stars alongside Maika Monroe, as well as Academy Award winners Troy Kotsur.

The synopsis is: Fresh out of prison, Ava (Maika Monroe) fights to reclaim her drug empire but is framed for murder, hunted by cops and a ruthless crime boss (Helen Hunt).

Forced to face her estranged father (Oscar nominee Troy Kotsur), she battles betrayal and bloodshed to survive.

‘In Cold Light’

On starring in the movie “In Cold Light,” Hawco said, “It was an adventure. I just watched it the other day, and I loved it. In my other job, I run my own TV show, so I’ve spent a lot of time with myself as a performer in the edit suite.”

“While I don’t really love to watch the work I do, regardless of the project because I really don’t like to spend time with myself like that, I watched this movie and thought it turned out very good,” he exclaimed.

“I love the script and the genre that it lives in is solid. Maxime Giroux is a really interesting filmmaker,” he said. “The female lead, Maika Monroe, is a superstar! She is a real movie star.”

“Then, you throw in Troy Kotsur and Helen Hunt, and it’s pretty cool,” he added.

Playing Bob in the film ‘In Cold Light’

On playing Bob, Hawco stated, “Bob is a really complex, twisted dude with real twisted goals and morality. It’s fun to play with that, as I’m trying to figure out how to get there, and question what kind of human being makes those choices and why does he make them. That was a lot of fun to explore.”

“I enjoyed building authenticity to the character,” he said. “I love work and I enjoy working. So, any opportunity I get to work with great people, I am all in.”

‘Jack Ryan’

On being a part of the hit series “Jack Ryan,” he said, “It’s great! Literally everyone on my call sheet has their own HBO series… you are dealing with the best! They are also great people on top of that.”

“Wendell Pierce cares deeply and he is great, and so are Micheal Kelly and John Hoogenakker. I love living in that world and learning things that you don’t ever get to experience,” he said.

“One of my favorite parts of the job is going behind the velvet rope that most people don’t get to experience,” he said. “We lived a blessed life, especially if you get to work in this business.”

‘Sullivan’s Crossing’

Hawco also discussed his experience in “Sullivan’s Crossing.” “That is the complete opposite of ‘Jack Ryan’ in terms of challenge from a physical perspective because I play a character who is a moron,” he said.

“Working with the lead Morgan Kohan, who plays Sullivan, is incredible. I would walk through fire for her. She’s a great human, a great actor and a great leader. She can do anything, and the part that she plays is a real tough role. She gives an acting masterclass each time,” he elaborated.

“The show ‘Sullivan’s Crossing’ is a huge hit in both the United States and Canada,” he added.

Heated Rivalry

Hawco also had kind words about the worldwide success of “Heated Rivalry.” While he is not in it, his friend is one of the producers of that popular series.

“What a phenomenon of a show that is. My good friend is one of the producers. That show is good for queer culture, it’s good for hockey and it’s good for Canada in general,” he said.

“Also, it’s good for filmmaking because it proves to everybody that it doesn’t have to be what you think it’s supposed to be. It can be what it has to be, and it either hits or it doesn’t. Lucky, in this case, it was a global phenomenon,” he elaborated.

“What a blessing, and what a thing to happen to Canada. Besides ‘Schitt’s Creek’ in the comedy realm, I don’t think anything in Canada ever hit like ‘Heated Rivalry’,” he concluded.

Lessons learned from the screenplay

On the lessons learned from the screenplay, he reflected, “My character is a twisted man. His puts his son through this experiment and it’s horrendous.”

“This script was really good. What I learned about myself as an actor is that I just love working every day,” he added.

Closing thoughts on ‘In Cold Light’

When asked what he wants fans and viewers to get out of “In Cold Light,” he responded, “I don’t want them to get anything out of it. I want them to like it or not like it. I authentically want them to have an experience that they want to have. I think it is a ride.”

“You’ve got this filmmaker and this team, which makes really beautiful, interesting, and thoughtful films,” he noted.

“So you’ve got that juxtaposed with this thriller in 90 minutes. Also, Maika Monroe, lives in this character, and you’ve got two Oscar winners (Troy and Helen) and me and David Haysom chasing them around, so that’s pretty cool,” he concluded.
