In a Rolling Stone interview, Tyler said when he and the gang reappear in 2017, it will probably be the group’s final journey.
“I’m doing 30 [solo] shows from May until August,” the singer said. “And then in 2017 we go out with Aerosmith. We’re probably doing a farewell tour. Look, there’s two bands that still have the original members, us and the Stones. I’m grateful for that. Whether we do a farewell tour or go into the studio and do another record, I’m just excited about it.”
Tyler corroborated bandmate Brad Whitford’s announcement that the band is considering a final tour.
“We are actually talking about that — about actually putting together a sort of wind-down tour which we would call the Farewell Tour,” Whitford said in December on Eddie Trunk’s podcast.
“I guess it’s just because of our age. You know, something’s gonna happen. It’s just inevitable that somebody’s not gonna be able to do it anymore. So it would be very nice to take a nice long bow and say thank you and … put it to bed kind of gracefully,” the guitarist added
The Boston-based rockers are on a hiatus after their Moscow performance in September 2015 that ended their six-tour run the past seven years.
While there have been no scheduled gigs for the band, the 68-year-old Tyler is busy promoting his solo album, a country-influenced project that generated a negative reaction from lead guitarist Perry.
If Aerosmith, the biggest hard rock act in the United States having sold 150 million albums worldwide, decides to go on a final tour next year, the group will be the latest iconic band to embark on a farewell journey.
Los Angeles’ Motley Crue ended its final tour via a hometown gig at the Staples Center on December 31, 2015. The historic performance came a year after its members signed the Cessation of Touring Agreement to put an end to the band, promising never to reunite.
British heavy metal icon Black Sabbath is also ending its monumental journey, launching a final tour that started in Nebraska early this year.
In a video announcement, the band said: “Now it ends, the final tour by the greatest metal band of all time, Black Sabbath. Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler close the final chapter in the final volume of the incredible Black Sabbath story. Black Sabbath’s farewell tour, ‘The End,’ begins on January 20, 2016 and it promises to surpass all previous tours with their most mesmerizing production ever. When this tour concludes, it will truly be the end, the end of one of the most legendary bands in Rock ‘n Roll history… Black Sabbath.”
After the tour’s North American leg, Black Sabbath is heading to Australia and New Zealand for a series of performances starting at the Perth Arena in Perth on April 15.
