Actress and dancer Kathryn McCormick talks ‘Like Air’ documentary (Includes interview)

On her new documentary, Like Air, McCormick said, “I ended up going back home and my husband, who was my boyfriend at the time, met up with Jake Viramontez, a documentarian and it came down to a documentary, since we wanted to capture the rawness of the artistry of dance. We ended up going that way. I was motivating and teaching these kids.”

McCormick was a contestant on sixth season of So You Think You Can Dance, where she was second runner-up. The dancer has continued to be an all-star for the reality competition series ever since. This is the first film she ever worked on with her husband, Jacob Patrick. The film directly parallels McCormick’s role on the reality dancing competition. as she mentors the next generation of dancers. “I didn’t even think that I would make it on the show,” she said. “I ended up auditioning eight months before anything came my way, and the third time I made it on the show. My biggest goal was to be able to stay on as long as I could, and that’s exactly what happened. It was an honor to make it that far.”

When asked how she handled the responsibility of being a “role model” and mentor for aspiring dancers, she said, “That has been a dream of mine. My biggest mission is to be able to remind others of their worth and how incredibly beautiful they are when they move. I am a natural motivator, and I want to help others reach their full potential. It’s a huge responsibility, but it’s something that I love.”

Regarding her plans for the future, she said, “Right now, I am working on So You Think You Can Dance, which runs parallel to the documentary. I have a beautiful young girl that I am mentoring. It has been an unbelievable journey to watch her soul soar.”
