On their new single “Rain,” Sheehan said, “It was probably the second to last song to be written for the record. It was one of those songs that reflected where we were in the world. Being Irishmen from Ireland, we’re very used to rain in summer. It was a good message for the way we felt at the time, and we wanted to write about that moment when someone leaves you behind. You’re looking for some of the best metaphors, and rain seemed to be the best metaphor. The weather becomes such a backdrop to your emotions, and we gave it a real summer feel. We juxtaposed it with a summer-feeling track. We joked in the studio. We called it sexual sadness, where the song itself felt sexual, but the lyrics are sad. It was a really cool combination of emotions.”
Last year, they performed at Stage 17 for the hit New York radio station 95.5 PLJ. “It was great! We haven’t played in over two years, but it was so much fun to just get out there and play,” he said. “It was nice! New York is like the flagship city, so you don’t want to screw it up in New York.”
He listed “Hall of Fame,” their collaboration with will.i.am, as his personal favorite song from The Script. “It penetrates to the everyday person, since there is no Hall of Fame for nurses, doctors, firemen and normal people. That’s why we wrote that song. I’m super proud of that song,” he said. “That year, they wanted to use that song as part of the Olympics, and we said ‘no,’ since for us, it wasn’t about those people who had those achievements. It was about normal ,everyday people and their achievements. In our stupidity, we didn’t want to do it. Then, it turned into a blessing, since it never became the Olympic song. It became a song that everyday person can hang around their neck and kind of go, ‘this is my song.’ Suddenly, we are singing on football, tennis, soccer and golf and all these major events.”
