“I play Susana, who is in the country without papers. She lives on the estate of a Beverly Hills tycoon who is trying to seduce her on her wedding day no less! Susanna is strong and stands up to her boss even though she is threatened with deportation. When the show played last year, the production received glowing reviews. It was great to read them and know that people loved our show and our message. This production is funny and clever and because it’s in English and Spanglish, it’s more accessible for today’s audiences. The original Figaro fought for equality at a time when the leaders thought that only a certain class of people deserved to have rights. The producers are bringing Figaro back because they believe that especially now, it’s important to share the message that human rights are universal, no matter your race, your gender, or where your parents happen to have been born. I have many Mexican and Latino friends that are in this situation and it’s so important celebrate diversity and equality,” she said.
She had nothing but the kindest words about working with lyricist Vid Guerrerio. “The man’s a genius. To think that he wrote all new lyrics to Mozart’s original score and made the show poignant and hilarious. I love working with this cast and staff. I’m having a great time,” she said.
For aspiring actors, she said, “Get yourself out there. Audition and your opportunity will come, if you are prepared. Learn the required material and polish it up as much as possible. Go into an audition like you are the best in the room.”
Each day, Alicea is motivated by her desire to tell a story. “I want to share Susanna’s story with the audience,” she said. “Waking up for rehearsals every day and knowing that the show will have a great impact on people is a great motivation for me.”
This is a show for theater and opera lovers and we are only here for three weeks. This limited engagement runs from April 7 to 23.
