A complete guide to superhero movies coming 2015-16

Avengers: Age of Ultron (May 1, 2015)

Who’s in it: Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Don Cheadle, Aaron-Taylor Johnson, Elizabeth Olson, James Spader, Samuel L. Jackson

Superheroes you’ll see: Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Iron Patriot, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Ultron, Vision

What to expect: After the huge box-office success of 2012’s The Avengers, the Marvel universe is uniting again for what promises to be a bigger spectacle than ever. Things go horribly wrong when Tony Stark creates a sentient robot called Ultron, and when he grows out of control it’ll be up to an expanded Avengers team to take him down.

Ant-Man (July 17, 2015)

Who’s in it: Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Corey Stoll, Michael Douglas

Superheroes you’ll see: Ant-Man, Yellow Jacket, Hope Van Dyne (Red Queen)

What to expect: Reportedly the last time Marvel is going to do an “origin story” movie, this will see Marvel’s second Ant-Man, Scott Lang, as he (perhaps begrudgingly) takes on the mantle of the size-changing superhero. It will also see the original Ant-Man, Hank Pym, and should be an interesting look at how a thief embraces heroism.

Fantastic Four (August 7, 2015)

Who’s in it: Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan, Jamie Bell, Toby Kebbell

Superheroes you’ll see: Mister Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch, The Thing, Doctor Doom

What to expect: After a pushed-back release date and some racist backlash, the first teaser for the movie premiered a few weeks ago and fans are cautiously optimistic. After the previous two movies failed to thrill critics and audiences, this movie seems to be heading in a sci-fi direction, going for a more subtle approach to superpowers.

Deadpool (February 12, 2016)

Who’s in it: Ryan Reynolds, T.J. Miller, Ed Skrein, Gina Carano

Superheroes you’ll see: Deadpool, Colossus

What to expect: Despite the wise-cracking mercenary’s poorly-received appearance in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, leaked test footage got fans buzzing and not long after, the film got a green light and release date. Deadpool may have the largest “cult status” within the Marvel universe, so a hyper-violent, snarky and fourth-wall-breaking hero seems like just the jolt the comic-book-movie world needs.

Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice (March 25, 2016)

Who’s in it: Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Gal Godot, Jesse Eisenberg, Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne

Superheroes you’ll see: Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Cyborg, Aquaman, Lex Luthor

What to expect: This film occupies a weird space, in that it’s both a sequel to Man of Steel and a setup for the rest of the planned DC cinematic universe. While Batman and Superman will figure in the most heavily, we’ll also be introduced to Wonder Woman, Cyborg, Aquaman and possibly more superheroes. Zack Snyder is once again at the helm, so expect a slick-looking movie.

Captain America: Civil War (May 6, 2016)

Who’s in it: Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Chadwick Boseman, Anthony Mackie

Superheroes you’ll see: Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow, Falcon, Black Panther, Spider-Man?

What to expect: It’s not The Avengers, but this movie looks like it will be comparable in scope. Based on the Marvel comics event, it will see Captain America and Iron Man on opposite sides of a high-stakes debate on privacy. The movie got a bit more exciting-sounding last week when it was reported that Spider-Man will be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe — and he may just make his first appearance here.

X-Men: Apocalypse (May 27, 2016)

Who’s in it: James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult, Jennifer Lawrence, Evan Peters, Oscar Isaac, Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner, Alexandra Shipp, Rose Byrne, Ian McKellen

Superheroes you’ll see: Charles Xavier, Magneto, Beast, Mystique, Quicksilver, Apocalypse, Nightcrawler, Jean Grey, Cyclops(?), Rogue(?)

What to expect: After last year’s excellent Days of Future Past, Bryan Singer will complete the trilogy that began with First Class to reportedly tell an origin story of the mutants. The villain Apocalypse will obviously figure into this, as will returning mutants Beast, Mystique and Quicksilver. Little else is known right now, though Bryan Singer recently shared this intriguing bit of concept art.

Suicide Squad (August 5, 2016)

Who’s in it: Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney, Cara Delevigne

Superheroes you’ll see: Deadshot, Joker, Harley Quinn, Rick Flag, Captain Boomerang, Enchantress, Deathstroke(?)

What to expect: Think the Avengers, but with supervillains instead. The Suicide Squad is a group of villains who go on deadly missions in exchange for lighter prison sentences, and with strong personalities like the Joker and Captain Boomerang, it will be interesting to see if Warner Bros. can pull this one off. Whenever the Squad has appeared in comics and in animated shows, the stories have always revolved around clashing personalities as much as it’s about the missions themselves.

Gambit (October 7, 2016)

Who’s in it: Channing Tatum

Superheroes you’ll see: Gambit

What to expect: Hard to say on this one, as very little is known about the project so far. Gambit has always been a popular X-Men character so we can only hope it won’t turn out like Deadpool in X-Men Origins.

Doctor Strange (November 4, 2016)

Who’s in it: Benedict Cumberbatch

What to expect: Once again, not too much is confirmed here. Doctor Strange is a very different type of Marvel character, relying on magic and dwelling within strange realms. He’s closest to Thor in this regard, and it will be interesting to see what Cumberbatch brings to the master of the arcane.
