Digital Journal AI Ethics Policy

We aim to responsibly integrate AI technologies to enhance journalism while maintaining our commitment to accuracy, transparency, and ethical standards. This policy outlines how AI will be used to support, not replace, human creativity and judgment, ensuring that the content we produce remains trustworthy and of the highest quality.

1. Transparency and Disclosure

AI-generated content must be clearly labeled: Any content created, edited, or influenced by AI will be disclosed clearly to readers, with prominent labeling.

Responsible disclosure: Disclosures will be easily recognizable and placed in visible areas of the content, avoiding vague or hidden design elements.

2. Data Privacy and Security

Protecting sensitive information: AI systems will not be fed sensitive or confidential information, such as personal data or proprietary business information, without proper anonymization or consent.

Compliance with regulations: All AI usage will comply with applicable privacy laws, such as GDPR and CCPA, ensuring that data collected and processed by AI is secure and used appropriately.

3. Accuracy and Human Oversight

Human accountability: AI tools are used to assist in creating content but are not a substitute for human judgment. All AI-generated content will be reviewed by an editor to ensure factual accuracy and journalistic integrity. Humans remain ultimately accountable for all published content.

Mitigating AI biases: We commit to monitoring and mitigating any biases in AI-generated content to avoid reinforcing stereotypes or creating discriminatory narratives.

4. Ethical Use of AI

AI for lawful and ethical purposes: AI will only be used in ways that align with Digital Journal’s core values and legal standards. Any use of AI that compromises journalistic integrity or leads to misinformation is strictly prohibited.

Editorial guidelines: AI tools will be used to enhance reporting but not for automating editorial decision-making. Editors retain final say on all published content.

Respect for IP: AI tools will not use copyrighted material without permission. Digital Journal will use AI tools trained on licensed or proprietary content.

Originality of content: We ensure that AI-generated content adheres to copyright and intellectual property laws, safeguarding the rights of creators.

6. AI in Visual and Multimedia Content

Minimizing mis/disinformation risks: We will monitor the use of AI-generated visuals to prevent misrepresentation or unintended misinformation.

7. Continuous Monitoring and Improvement

Regular policy reviews: This policy will be reviewed periodically to adapt to new AI advancements and regulatory changes. We will also incorporate feedback from staff and stakeholders to refine our approach.
