It’s perfectly understandable why people travel far and wide for specific medical procedures.

When it comes to specialized cosmetic procedures like rhinoplasty and facelifts, it’s becoming more common for patients to seek the best to receive the expected results.

A recent article in the New York Times suggested a growing trend among NYC surgeons is treating worldwide clientele paying $200k a piece for facelift surgery. Big city high prices are not surprising, but that’s why Dr. Ali Esmail is quite the enigma. He is in Winnipeg, not exactly a mecca of cosmetic surgery and better known for being one of the coldest cities in North America. As one of the first surgeons in Western Canada to offer specialized and sought-after plastic surgeries like forehead reduction/hairline lowering surgery, people are also making the pilgrimage to Winnipeg to avail of Dr. Ali’s specialization in rhinoplasty and facelifts and putting the Visage clinic on the map in Western Canada.

“I think with the internet and social media today, the cosmetic surgery patient is doing their research.  Gone are the days of going to your local surgeon.  People want that one surgeon specializing in a minimal number of procedures.  When you go into bigger markets like Beverly Hills, you see it more segmented and specialized where surgeons become known for one single procedure,”  says Dr. Ali, who is the first Double Board Certified facial plastic surgeon to call Winnipeg home, “When I came out of fellowship I considered some bigger cities, many people told me you need at least a million people to support a specialized facial plastic surgery practice. My thoughts were that if you do great work, people will notice and come, and so far, that’s worked out for us” ”

Indeed, Dr. Ali Esmail’s impressive list of credentials is one of the reasons he’s well sought-out as one of Canada’s top cosmetic facial surgeons. After completing a tech-based MBA at the renowned Engineering Department of the University of Waterloo, which he finished before residency training, he accepted a competitive fellowship at the Glasgold Group of Princeton, NJ.

His caring, can-do personality is demonstrated in person with his clients and on social media.

Dr. Ali’s facelift results on his Instagram page have attracted worldwide attention.

“Not the same person” is a typical comment on most posts referring to the dramatic results.  After all, Dr. Ali knows very well that when it comes to making changes to someone’s face, there’s absolutely no room for error. Dr. Ali’s perfectionist mindset makes the trip to his clinic well worth it for many of his clients.

“Of all the different types of cosmetic surgeries, facial cosmetics is the most difficult to master,” Dr. Ali says. “Especially in rhinoplasty, every millimetre matters. There’s intricate, fine detail, and every surgery is slightly different. It’s work that can change somebody’s life for the better or for, the worse, and I always strive to aim for the better.  There is no such thing as being a master of rhinoplasty. It’s a very humbling surgery.”

An essential reason Dr. Ali Esmail’s clients don’t mind making the trip to Winnipeg is the pampered feeling they receive at Visage. It’s been said when clients walk from the snow-filled parking lot into Visage’s reception and waiting area; it’s like standing in the lobby of a suave Dubai hotel. Even the toilet is gold which Dr. Ali notes is a very popular Instagram post with his clientele. Besides the latter being a beautiful, posh clinic, Dr. Ali ensures that the experience matches the decor.  From gift bags after treatments to car service for out-of-town guests. Every detail ensures that the client is in a calming and caring environment.

“We make arrangements for patients who make the trip and have to spend the night, especially if they come alone,” says Dr. Ali. “We can even arrange a nursing service for someone to stay with them if they need it. It’s all about caring for all those things so our clients can experience where they just come in, have the surgery, and not think of anything else.”
