US Stocks Rally for Second Day

NEW YORK (voa) – U.S. stocks rallied for a second day Thursday, amid optimism the U.S. economy is emerging from a recession that began early last year.

At the closing bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 157 points (1.6 percent) to end the day at 9,920. The broad market indicator, the S&P 500, gained more than 16 points (1.5 percent) to close at 1,130. The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index climbed more than 20.5 points (one percent) to 1,934.

In London, the Financial Times Index ended the day up 76 points (1.5 percent) at 5,165, while in Paris, the CAC 40 Index was up 55 points (more than one percent) at 4,462.

The Dax Index in Frankfurt climbed 55 points (1.1 percent) to 5,108 in late trading.

Gold for current delivery in New York closed at $282.10, up 20 cents from Wednesday.

The dollar was mixed against the other major currencies.
