Toronto stocks plummet

The Toronto Stock Exchange’s 300 composite index plummeted 259.72 points to
9,337.54 at the close of trading Monday. The S&P/TSE-60 was down 19.52
points at 561.62. A total of 116.9 million shares were traded, with 2.83
million Canadian dollars (U.S. $1.90 billion).

Declining stocks outnumbered advancers 624-425 with 301 stocks unchanged.
Eleven of the TSE’s 14 subgroups were lower, with consumer products up 118
to 14,876.9.

Active stocks included Brookfield Property, down 75 Canadian cents (50 U.S.
cents) at 19 Canadian dollars (U.S. $12.74), and Nortel Networks, down 5.15
Canadian dollars (U.S. $3.45) at 82.60 Canadian dollars (U.S. $55,37).

Large Price changers included B-Split, down 10 Canadian dollars (U.S. $6.70)
at 133 Canadian dollars (U.S. $89.15) and Fairfax Financial, up 10 Canadian
dollars (U.S. $6.70) at 186 Canadian dollars (U.S. $124.68). In currency
trading, the Canadian dollar was down 0.09 U.S. cent, closing at 67.03 U.S.
cents, compared to 67.12 U.S. cents at the close on Friday.
