Target Canada workers offered jobs, discounts, with Sears Canada

While Sears did not specifically name positions open to Target employees, it released a statement suggesting that those affected by the Target closures should check out job postings on the Sears website.

Target announced that it is getting out of the Canadian market, saying it is chronically losing money at its 133 Canadian outlets. While not connected to the Target closures, on the same day Sony said that their remaining 15 stores in Canada would be closing and it, too, is getting out of the in-store retail business in the country.

All Target stores are expected to be closed by June. Their stores will be liquidated but they will remain open, Target said, until that process has been completed. Their employees have a $70 million trust fund and it is believed the fund will ensure that each of them will receive their salary for 16 weeks after their job ends.

Sears said that next week they will have information on their website about job fairs to take place across Canada and suggested that Target employees keep posted for the date and time of a job fair in their location.

“There will also be an open invitation to Target Canada head office employees for a meet-and-greet with Sears executives and human resources experts on January 21 at Sears head office located at the Toronto Eaton Centre.” Sears also said in its statement.

That isn’t all Sears has offered, for 16 weeks they said they will be offering Target employees the same store discount that their own employees get. That offer starts on January 21.
