At Serenity Mental Health Centers, the Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Technician role is more than a job.

For those with grit, compassion, and a desire to be a part of the change, Serenity’s TMS Technician training program prepares new hires to make an immediate and lasting difference in patients’ lives.

And the best part? There’s no prior healthcare experience needed.

“You’re starting something that is going to save someone’s life. And not just theirs; their kids, their partner, their family,” said Nick Olsen, Training Manager at Serenity Mental Health Centers. “If you’re looking for a purpose, this is it. We’re not hiring employees. We’re building warriors in the fight for mental health.”

From new hire to lifesaver in just two weeks

Serenity’s two-week training program takes place in one of several training hubs across the U.S.: Cherry Creek (CO), Lehi (UT), Phoenix (AZ), or the newest site in Sandy Springs (GA). Trainees are flown in and provided with hotel accommodations near their assigned training center. From day one, they are hands-on in action.

By the end of training, each tech completes 50–75 motor threshold sessions, mastering the technical skillset needed to confidently support patients. They study real-world clinical data and engage in meaningful discussions about TMS and how it compares to traditional treatment options.

“Training was hands-on, immersive, and exactly what I needed to build confidence. Running real appointments while still learning helped ease my nerves and turned early mistakes into valuable lessons,” said Sarah Awad, TMS Technician. “Watching other techs connect with patients in their own unique ways was inspiring and I left training feeling capable, supported, and ready to start.”

Each day is carefully structured to blend classroom learning, shadowing real appointments, practicing treatments on peers, and rigorous knowledge checks. Trainees are assessed daily and expected to return with mastery of topics like the STAR*D study and Serenity’s core treatment standards.

“We even have something called the ‘TMS Gauntlet,’ it’s 45 questions on everything from safety protocols to patient care techniques. It’s all about internalizing what we teach,” Olsen said.

More than machines: teaching empathy in every session

Beyond the technical skills, trainees are coached on how to lead with empathy. Serenity’s approach transforms stress into strength by guiding patients to reframe negativity through gratitude.

“Rather than saying, ‘My car broke down and today sucks,’ we teach techs to help patients say, ‘I’m grateful I had someone to bring me to this appointment,’” Olsen said. “We incorporate gratitude into healing because we know mindset matters. Especially under the helmet.”

Safety is paramount. While side effects of TMS are rare, Serenity devotes hours of training to prevention and response. The company emphasizes early signs of potential complications and how to intervene with compassion and accountability.

“If you have the grit, and you’re here to support and love our patients, Serenity is the place for you,” Olsen said. “But if you’re just showing up for a paycheck, you’ll burn out. This is intense work. But it’s life-changing work.”

The start of a career, not just a job

Serenity is one of the only mental health providers in the U.S. that can self-certify TMS technicians on BrainsWay® machines, thanks to the scale of their operations and commitment to quality.

“We can certify trainees ourselves and get them treating patients immediately after graduation, rather than waiting weeks for an outside representative,” Olsen explained. “That kind of investment in our training team sets us apart.”

Serenity’s internal growth structure offers a wealth of long-term opportunities. After four months, techs can become senior TMS technicians and even gain PTSD certification. From there, many go on to become Patient Care Managers, Practice Managers, Recruiters, Trainers, and more.

“Whatever you want to become, Serenity will help you do that,” Olsen said. “It’s a create-your-own-journey kind of place.”

A team built with purpose

At Serenity, you’re not just stepping into another role. You’re the backbone of the company. A community of people who wake up every day and are driven to make a difference.

“You can go outside and see someone struggling with mental illness. It’s in our neighborhoods, our communities, our homes,” Olsen said. “It takes a lot of people to fight that fight, and that’s what we’re doing here.”

For those who are ready to step into something bigger than themselves, Serenity offers not just a job, but a place where professional growth, personal fulfillment, and life-saving impact go hand in hand.
